Queen’s Discography Riding Potential $1 Billion Payout
There is not a soul alive today who has not heard Queen’s music, nor the influence of their sound on contemporary musicians – and soon their body of work could be sold for a tidy amount.
An unnamed source within the music industry told an international publication over the weekend that Universal Music Group (UMG) is in talks to obtain the legendary rock band’s catalogue from Disney Music Group.
The “well underway” deal is looking at a sale that could see well over $1 billion handed over “within one month.”
In December last year, Bruce Springsteen set the benchmark for sold catalogues by selling the rights to his music to Sony Music Entertainment for a cool $500 million – an amount that could be eclipsed by the Queen/UMG deal.
Thanks to the 2018 Oscar-winning biographical film, “Bohemian Rhapsody”, the band’s profile has seen renewed popularity and elevated worth, further cementing the legacy of late frontman, Freddie Mercury, who passed away from AIDS-related complications in 1991.
